How it works

From a webpage to a
community verdict

Extralayer adds a truth layer on top of any content you encounter online — powered by perceptual hashing and the people who care about accurate information.

01

Install the extension

Add Extralayer to Chrome in one click. No account required to start browsing. The extension runs silently in the background until you need it.

The extension only activates when you interact with media on a page. It never reads your passwords, form data, or personal information.

02

Browse normally

Visit any website — news articles, social media, blogs. Extralayer quietly watches for images and videos as you scroll, without slowing down your browser.

The extension uses a lightweight content script that only processes media you hover over or click on, keeping resource usage minimal.

03

Content is fingerprinted

When you hover over an image or video, Extralayer generates a perceptual hash — a compact numeric fingerprint that uniquely identifies the visual content.

Perceptual hashing is similar to how Shazam identifies songs. Even if an image is slightly cropped, resized, or re-compressed, the hash still matches. Only the fingerprint leaves your device — never the actual image or video.

04

We check the record

The hash is sent to our servers and matched against a database of previously seen content. We return everything the community has said about that exact piece of media.

If the content has never been seen before, a new record is created and you become the first person to document it.

05

You see the community verdict

The extension side panel shows a trust score, source references, and community comments. You can see at a glance whether the content has been verified, disputed, or flagged.

Trust scores are calculated from the ratio of upvotes to downvotes, the number of independent source verifications, and the age and credibility of contributors.

06

You contribute

Add your own context. Upvote accurate content, flag misleading claims, leave a comment with a source link. Every contribution strengthens the collective record.

Your contributions are tied to your account's reputation. Verified contributors carry more weight. There are no anonymous mass-manipulation attacks.

What is the trust score?

The trust score is a number between 0 and 100 that reflects how the community collectively assesses the authenticity of a piece of content. It is not a definitive fact-check — it is a signal.

Community votes

Upvotes and downvotes from verified contributors, weighted by account reputation.

Source verification

Cross-references with credible external sources submitted by the community.

Content history

How long the content has been in the database and whether its verdict has changed over time.

Common questions

Does Extralayer upload my images or videos?+

No. Only a short numeric fingerprint (perceptual hash) is sent to our servers. The actual image or video never leaves your device.

What is a perceptual hash?+

A perceptual hash is a compact representation of the visual content of an image or video — similar to a fingerprint. Unlike a cryptographic hash, it is resilient to minor edits: a cropped or slightly re-compressed image will produce the same hash as the original.

Can the trust score be manipulated?+

We use rate limiting, account reputation weighting, and pattern detection to resist coordinated manipulation. No system is perfect, but mass-voting from low-reputation or new accounts has minimal effect.

What happens if content has never been seen before?+

A new record is created. You become the first contributor. Other users who later encounter the same content will see your annotation.

Does it work on all websites?+

It works on the vast majority of websites. A small number of sites with strict content security policies may limit some functionality. We are actively working to improve compatibility.

Is my browsing history stored?+

No. We do not store which URLs you visit. We only store the hashes of media you interact with and the contributions you choose to submit.
